SUBJECT OVERVIEW

This is a studio-based capstone subject which bridges design and ecological science. Studio projects will address ecological design as fundamental to modern landscape architectural practice.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this subject are to:

  • analyse a site and apply ecological theories to practice;
  • develop a palette of approaches to ecological design;
  • design at the scales of the masterplan to detail design.

GENERIC SKILLS

On completion of the subject students should have developed the following generic skills:

  • critical and spatial thinking;
  • graphical representation of ideas;
  • presentation skills both orally and visually;
  • understanding design processes.

STUDIO OUTLINE

In this studio we addressed the issue of resilience in design with a site along the concrete-contained Moonee Ponds Creek. Students explored history, ecology, play, and pragmatics to create a new linear journey along this urban river. During the course of the studio we also undertook a boat trip down the Yarra and up the Maribyrnong.
