Bachelor of Environments Alumni: Civil Systems
I chose the Bachelor of Environments because it gave me the freedom to choose my major in 2nd year and within the construction industry where I want to work. Though I intended to do Construction at the beginning, I ended up choosing Civil Systems instead.
I decided to major in Civil Systems because I feel comfortable doing the engineering systems subjects, in which I can use my strong background in mathematics and science subjects to solve the tasks.
My favourite subjects in the first year was Constructing Environments, which introduced me the world of structural engineering where one can use science to give the structures the strength to stand and not fail.
To me, studying at the University of Melbourne meant a highly regarded academic environment with excellent teaching quality, as well as an exploration into diversity.
My advice to new students is to enjoy your time here, make friends with a lots of other students and keep up with the study. When you know how to use your own knowledge and integrate it with the team, there is no task too difficult.
I am looking forward to becoming a structural engineer, especially in high rise buildings. It has always been my dream to be part of the teams who create famous landmarks around the world.
The BEnvs not only helped prepare me for the course Master of Engineering (Structural) which I am doing at the moment by consisting of a large number of core engineering subjects, but also gave insight into other major in the industry such as architecture, environmental studies, property, construction management and so on. I appreciate the ability to see the projects in other people’s points of view.
Five words that sum me up are funny, enthusiastic, brilliance, optimistic, messy.
My personal motto is… ‘Time wasted is time not spent’
HUNG MANH IS NOW DOING GRADUATE STUDY
I chose to do graduate study in Master of Engineering (Structural) so that I can work as an engineer as the decision made in undergraduate.
It’s different studying at graduate level because all the subjects are now focusing deeply on structural engineering and not all the different areas that are covered in bachelor level. I believe it is the way graduate study should be.
In my Masters I am looking forward to doing exchange to the UK in one year so that I can experience another highly ranked academic environment. I also wish to travel and explore Europe in the mean time.
What inspires you at Uni? The lecturers and tutors are very motivated in engaging students to make sure we can get the most out of the class.
