Bachelor of Environments: Construction
I chose the Bachelor of Environments because at the completion of year 12 I was unsure of what I wanted to study and the Bachelor of Environments appeared to offer the broadest range of options that interested me.
I decided to major in Construction after tossing up between it and Property in 2nd Year. The practical, planning and management aspects of construction won out in the end.
My favourite subjects were Structures & Construction Systems, Project Planning Studio.
To me, studying at the University of Melbourne meant I was receiving the best available education. I was surrounded by intelligent, fun and interesting people.
My advice to new students is enjoy the university lifestyle. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity where you can meet amazing people and gain memorable stories. Don’t stress too much about results (but pass!) and focus learning the lessons that will be critical to your career.
I am looking forward to learning as much as I can about the industry during my Graduate program so I possess the knowledge to further my career. Establishing strong relationships along the way.
The BEnvs helped prepare me for learning how to learn. There is a lot of truth in the premise that the majority of technical knowledge is learnt while on the job.
Five words that sum me up are: Honest, hard working, social, active, organised.
My personal motto is ‘Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose!’
ANDY IS NOW WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY
What do you do? I am a Graduate at Brookfield Multiplex Constructions.
How did you find your job? A friend made me aware that Multiplex were looking for people so I submitted my resume to someone in HR and after two interviews I was offered a position.
Recently I have been working on Mainpoint Apartments. A 42 storey apartment tower in Southbank
What inspires you at work? The calibre of people working around me and their ability to challenge me and help me learn.
The future of the industry seems strong financially. Trends are strong towards OHSE issues along with the usual time and cost objectives.
My greatest achievement so far is completing a bachelor at the University of Melbourne and securing a job with a multinational, top tier builder.
