Bachelor of Environments: Architecture

I chose the Bachelor of Environments because it provided me with the opportunity to explore the different design majors before choosing Architecture

I decided to major in Architecture because I have been interested in Architecture since childhood and after studying a breadth of subjects in first year I enjoyed the building design elements the most. I particularly enjoy the challenge of meeting a design brief at a variety of scales in the built environment.

My favourite subjects were… Aside from the design studios, my favourite subjects have been the architectural history subjects which provided great context for the study of architecture and the worlds’ most influential architects, as well as inspiring my design projects.

To me, studying at the University of Melbourne meant studying at a well reputed institution that could provide me with an internationally recognised degree.

My advice to new students is use your electives to explore your interests and broaden your knowledge, choose subjects that you think you will enjoy rather than choosing subjects that are purely to keep your options open for your major. In the long run, if you change your mind about your major it is always possible to complete the subjects required. Also remember to enjoy social activities and don’t get too preoccupied with study.

I am looking forward to designing projects that will have a positive impact upon the lives of the people who use them and the environment they occupy.

The BEnvs helped prepare me for understanding the architectural design process for future work in the industry.

Five words that sum me up are hungry, oenophile, optimistic, artistic, loving.

My personal motto is Cook, Eat, Drink, Be Merry and then Study.

ANNIE IS NOW DOING GRADUATE STUDY

I chose to do graduate study in Architecture because
I majored in Architecture during the Bachelor of Environments and wanted to complete my studies so that I could enter the architectural workforce on a professional basis.

It’s different studying at graduate level… There is more interaction with practicing industry professionals and smaller class sizes which allow for more valuable learning experiences.

In my Masters I am looking forward to the potential of participating in a travelling studio in India and gaining knowledge from the wide range of industry professionals that
tutor and give lectures.

What inspires you at Uni? The challenge of meeting a set brief yet the freedom of creating an innovative design often without some of the boundaries enforced by industry, regulations, science and clients.

SHE IS ALSO WORKING FULL TIME

What do you do? I am a student architect at Caba Design.

How did you find your job? I searched the local phone book and submitted a hard copy of my resume.

Recently I have been working on small scale commercial and residential construction and renovation.

What inspires you at work? The opportunity to improve the health and happiness of the people who will occupy the buildings. The future of the industry seems to be heading towards a greater recognition of the importance of climate and sustainability in design.

My greatest achievement so far is being awarded the Deans Honours award for my studies in 2009.
