Bachelor of Environments: Architecture

I chose the Bachelor of Environments because there is so much involved in architecture that it really does require a breadth of knowledge and skills.

I decided to major in Architecture because I have always had an interest in art and design; I think of Architecture as the practical application of these interests which offers the prospect of strong job opportunities.

My favourite subjects: While Design Studios are enjoyable and give you a chance to express your ideas, being an architect involves a lot more than being creative. I found Construction Design to be the most practical and relevant subject that I have studied. While it was an extremely challenging subject, and a lot of hard work, it really helped to prepare me for the workforce.

To me, studying at the University of Melbourne meant that I was presented with many challenges – living away from home and being involved in the first batch of students to go through the Melbourne Model proved to be testing, but anything that is challenging is also rewarding!

My advice to new students is work hard.

I am looking forward to returning to the workforce after completing Masters. I would like to focus on sustainable residential architecture and interiors. Preferably I would like to work in a small firm where you get to be involved in the whole process rather than a large firm where you can become pigeon holed.

The BEnvs helped prepare me for being open to change. The Bachelor of Environments wasn’t what I expected, so I resisted it a lot at first. After a while I accepted the course for what it was and came to the realisation that while the Melbourne Model may have some drawbacks, it also has its advantages.

Five words that sum me up are: Determined. Passionate. Creative. Obsessive. Dedicated.

My personal motto is work to live, don’t live to work… but if you can find a job that you love, you will never have to work a day in your life.

FRANCES IS NOW WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY

What do you do? I am a student architect at Haskell Architects.

How did you find your job? I researched lots of different firms, and then sent my email and portfolio to firms that I was interested in. Don’t wait for jobs to be advertised, because they often won’t be. There is no harm in ringing around and putting yourself out there.

Recently I have been working on a variety of different projects, mainly public works. I’ve been doing a lot of documentation and 3D modelling.

What inspires you at work? I have a boss who is really passionate about architecture. I find it inspirational that he doesn’t get bogged down by all the administration and bureaucracy that comes with the job.

The future of the industry seems dynamic. Issues of sustainability are changing the role and importance of architecture while technological advances in both design and construction are presenting new possibilities.

My greatest achievement so far is securing a place in the Masters program at The University of Melbourne.
