Bachelor of Environments: Construction
I chose the Bachelor of Environments because I wanted to go to Melbourne uni.
I decided to major in Construction because I’ve always been fascinated in how buildings are constructed.
My favourite subjects were Project Planning Studio, Concrete Structures and Construction, and Structures and Construction Systems. Project planning studio was a great subject as it involved us working in a team to solve how to best go about constructing a building – Issues that construction managers face on a daily basis. Concrete Structures & Construction and Structures & Construction Systems really taught us about the various elements involved in high rise and other forms of construction.
To me, studying at the University of Melbourne meant being part of a team that was dedicated and committed to achieving a goal. I found that both teachers and students showed great interest in what was being taught which motivated us to do better.
My advice to new students is to commit themselves entirely to what they’re being taught and to have a positive attitude towards group work as it will help them on the job to better deal with people and how to better go about decision making.
I am looking forward to becoming involved in large scale projects and be faced with situations where my judgement is crucial to what is being done.
The BEnvs helped prepare me for my year out in the industry as I learnt how to read plans and solve problems in a team environment.
Five words that sum me up are: Passionate, enthusiastic, self motivated, committed, dedicated.
My personal motto is…Completely immerse yourself in everything you choose to do.
FRANCESCO IS NOW WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY
What do you do? I am an Estimator and Contract Administrator at Buildcorp Commercial
How did you find your job? We were given a list of employers by the university so I applied to most of them and went through the usual interviewing process.
Recently I have been working on a tender for a project worth $20M and helping a project manager collect quotes and answering sub contractor queries.
What inspires you at work? The idea of knowing that I’m working in the industry I’ve always wanted to work in.
