Bachelor of Environments: Construction
I chose the Bachelor of Environments because I felt that it would give me the best opportunity to obtain the necessary knowledge and experience required to become an effective member of a construction team. I was lead to The University of Melbourne largely because of the high esteem in which the institution is held.
I decided to major in Construction Management because I have always had an affinity with working in the construction industry and this stream of study allowed me the greatest flexibility with a future career choice. Construction is a diverse industry with many differing roles which made it very attractive as a prospective student.
To me, studying at the University of Melbourne meant having an opportunity to begin a meaningful career in the construction industry. It has given me the knowledge and confidence to take on any challenge that presents itself.
My advice to new students is to work as hard as possible at University and to make the most of the important resources available. The very foundation of a hard working attitude at University can be transported directly into the workplace. It is also a great place to meet new people and can be the beginning of long term industry relationships.
The BEnvs helped prepare me for mostly for full time work. The diligence that is required to excel at University has assisted me greatly in fulfilling my role at work. The construction industry requires flexibility and adaptability and the Bachelor of Environments degree gave me a practice run for life in the workforce.
KEEGAN IS NOW WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY
What do you do? I am a Project Coordinator / Administrator at Hansen Yuncken (Building Solutions Division).
How did you find your job? The director of my division (Richard Hansen) actually assisted in the assessment of my Project Planning Studio Capstone Subject which sparked my interest in the company and consequently made me apply for a position in the company.
Recently I have been working on the company’s new Head Office in St Kilda Rd. It is a small project but the combination of a tight program and a large degree of responsibility has made the project very challenging but also highly rewarding.
