Bachelor of Environments: Architecture
I chose the Bachelor of Environments because it provided me with a broad knowledge of other elements and not only focusing on one particular thing. It allowed me to broaden my horizons by giving me the opportunity to do subjects from other faculties.
I decided to major in architecture because it plays a massive role in our daily life, you are exposed to architecture everywhere you go. The potential of being able to make the world a better place by contributing and create meaningful spaces for people to experience and appreciate would be a dream come true.
My favourite subjects were the architecture history subjects, because they provided me with a strong foundation of architectural knowledge of the past and how architecture progresses through time, and influences our present and future architectural direction. Also, the design studios because even though they are very demanding subjects, the reward you get at the end is something that you can be proud of. These studios equip you for your future endeavour in any field, because realising something in your head and putting it on paper, to creating it, is a skill that no one would able to teach, it is a process. There are no right or wrong answers, and there are no such things as perfect designs.
To me, studying at the University of Melbourne meant exposing myself to the resources they have and take in as much knowledge as possible from the those resources.
My advice to new students is you don’t need to be smart to be successful at uni or life, however you need to work hard to reach your goals.
I am looking forward to doing the Master of Architecture, travelling, and opening up my own architectural firm one day.
The BEnvs helped prepare me prepare for working in the industry.
Five words that sum me up are hard working, passionate, perfectionist, modest, high achiever.
My personal motto is No Pain No Gain.
MARWIN IS NOW WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY
What do you do? I am a student architect at McAllister Alcock Architects.
How did you find your job? By purely knocking on many architecture firms’ doors.
Recently I have been working on feasibility studies for future residential developments in various areas in Melbourne.
What inspires you at work? The dream of opening up my own firm and create a high quality, unique, well resolve and meaningful architecture.
The future of the industry seems to be heading into mass production, parametric design, cold and meaningless spaces and architecture.
My greatest achievement so far is getting a much needed and valuable experience at MA Architects.
