Bachelor of Environment: Construction

I chose the Bachelor of Environments because of the environmental aspect and the flexibility of the course as I was unsure I what I wanted to do when I finished year 12. I was drawn to architecture due to the romantic idea of design, however I quickly realised it wasn’t for me and I was easily able to change to the construction major.

I decided to major in Construction because I found that it was something I enjoyed learning about and the industry excited me. I have also always been interested in sustainable construction and design and this seemed like the perfect pathway.

My favourite subjects were Project Planning Studio and Environmental Building Systems. The Project Planning Studio was great because of how it brought subjects we had done over the years together. Environmental Building Systems because I think it is important for everyone who enters the industry to learn about the basic concepts behind sustainable design, and I also enjoyed it.

My advice to new students is to embrace other ways of thinking and learning. Question everything and everyone.

I am looking forward to seeing sustainable design and construction being part of the everyday workings of the industry.

MEI IS NOW WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY

What do you do? I am an Assistant Project Manager at PDS Group.

How did you find your job: Networking, I kept in contact with a number of people I met on site visits, when a job came up in their workplace they told me about it and I applied.

Recently I have been working on a residential tower in Docklands (300 apartment), and a housing development in Mentone (119 Townhouses).

What inspires you at work? The variety and the scale of the jobs that you work on and knowing the potential for what you could do in the future.

My greatest achievement so far is finding a job and an industry that keeps me interested and excited about what I do.
