Bachelor of Environments: Construction
I chose the Bachelor of Environments for three reasons:
1. Choice – The Melbourne model allowed me to dapple in different disciplines that make up the built environment, before committing to any specific role. I was consequently able to explore both architecture and construction management before deciding midway through the degree which field I felt most passionate about.
2. The Environment – Melbourne provided a forward thinking approach to sustainability, through integrating realistic methodology within most of my subjects. As a student I was encouraged to challenge current building techniques to improve the sustainability of the built environment.
3. Practical Experience – Melbourne Uni understands the important balance between theoretical learning and practical experience, and encourages BEnvs students to seek full time employment for one year before commencing the masters.
I decided to major in Construction Management because I value great design, yet I am not a designer. I enjoy technology, however I love working with people. Construction management provides an exciting opportunity to work with design, technology and people on a wide variety of projects. As a team you work to interpret a design and help it grow into a tangible product that is there for all to see.
My favourite subjects were:
1. Environmental building systems – An intensive subject full of environmental technology and ESD methodology.
2. Project Planning Studio – the perfect opportunity to combine all our knowledge from three years of study and apply it to a realistic project, guided by a large pool of industry professionals
My advice to new students is the more you put in, the more you get out. Network with fellow students and staff at every opportunity. Once you are out in the ‘real world,’ the people you met at uni will be the very same people who you work with. Maintain those relationships above everything else.
I am looking forward to celebrating the successful completion on my first project as construction manager with all the team that made it possible.
The BEnvs helped prepare me to begin challenging the norm. Construction can be plagued with dated methodology and individuals set in their own ways. Question everything, as fresh thinking encourages a competitive edge in a challenging industry.
Five words that sum me up are approachable, enthusiastic, reliable, open minded.
My personal motto is take the time to stop and listen, as the people around you are invaluable.
MICHAEL IS NOW WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY
What do you do? I am a Graduate at Contexx. I am involved in a graduate program that exposes me to multiple aspects within the industry. My employer is mindful not to ‘pigeon hole’ me within one role early in my career, as the best project managers are those who have an understanding of as many aspects within the industry as possible.
How did you find your job? Through networking with university staff and by calling around the industry. Prepare your resume early and apply for every opportunity that may suit you.
Recently I have been working on assisting the estimating department to win tenders. I meet with subcontractors to explain a tender, develop logistics diagrams to visually communicate our methodology and compare costs of different aspects of a project. In a month I am looking forward to moving on site to assist with project coordination.
What inspires you at work? The team of people, all working together towards a successful outcome.
The future of the industry seems challenging, governed by a balance between financial, social and environmental costs. I believe the industry must think beyond the bottom line and develop strategies for improving standards faster and more efficiently.
