I chose engineering because it allows me to pursue a career that provides me with subject flexibility by not restricting my choices to one specific stream. The course encompasses my interest in science and maths and brings these disciplines together in a practical manner.
I decided to major in structural engineering because I have always been interested in building design and fascinated by the different ways in which structural components can be manipulated to cater for various specific uses.
My favorite subject was Structural Theory and Design as it was one of the first subjects that integrated the knowledge learnt in previous years in a practical sense to give me a better understanding of the role of an Engineer.
To me studying at the University of Melbourne meant going to the most prestigious Australian University, with its reputation for excellence in Engineering and the expectation that the employment opportunities that follow may give me an edge.
My advice to new students is do what you enjoy in your time at University and follow the study path that most excites you.
I am looking forward to entering the workforce and developing my skills to become a proficient and professional Engineer.
Engineering will help prepare me for a career in Structural Engineering and think outside the square to achieve my goals.
Five words that sum me up are: determined, organized, focused, disciplined and conscientious.
My personal motto is “do it properly, do it once”.
